Prende, Lady of the Dawn

Lady of the Dawn

The Friday Blessing

Prende, morning star and lady of the rainbow, you who are honoured on the day that bears your name, look kindly on this small altar. Bless those about to be wed and those who love without ceremony. Give me the courage of the dawn, which arrives without apology, and the patience of the swallow that returns to the same eave.

Spoken at first light on a Friday, with a rose or a bowl of water set facing east.

Ideas for Offering

  • Keep Friday as her day: fresh flowers, clean cloth, no harsh words
  • Leave a bowl of water out overnight and pour it at the roots of a plant at dawn
  • Give a small piece of silver or a bead to a bride or a new couple in her name
  • Embroider or mend something rather than buying it new

Accepted Offerings

  • Roses and wildflowers gathered at dawn
  • Honey, milk, and small sweet breads
  • Silver jewellery, coins, and beads
  • Rainwater and spring water
  • Bridal ribbons and embroidered cloth

Offering Taboos

  • Do not work heavy labour on her Friday if it can wait
  • No cruelty spoken of women or of brides at her shrine
  • Avoid black cloth on her altar; hers is the colour of morning
  • Do not let her lamp or candle be knocked over in haste
